I was born in a place called Johnstone in 1962. I had two older brothers and by the time Scotland had beaten the world cup holders in 1967 I had a wee sister and brother to contend with.

By the early seventies my taste in music was somewhat mixed up, you had Mud, Gary Glitter and Elvis giving it yeeha on TOTP in one ear and you had Black Sabbath, Hawkwind and Jethro Tull giving it lalday in the other ear. (My older brother Harry was trying to wean me of glam rock to his more sophisticated music.)

By the time I was sixteen I was hooked on Hendrix, Free, Deep Purple, Melanie, Bowie. The list goes on and on and on.

Today my taste in music is as varied as you can get. Modern artists such as K T Tunstall,  Alicia Keys, Morcheeba, Jeff Buckley and Tom McRae have made me listen with great pleasure. Classical has its place as does some Jazz but Blues, folk and Bluegrass along with R&B, soul and good old Rock’n’Roll sits high on the list.

If I were to think about it, there isn’t one band, or artist, that has influenced my song writing. And there isn’t one style that comes through my songs, but a mixture of all.

Two songs that I have written are certainly influenced by people like Billy Connelly Dick Gaughan and Hamish Imlach, along with other Scottish folk writers who are undoubtedly some of the most talented songwriters there have been
